Solar panels work best when placed facing south at an angle of inclination of 36o . Nevertheless, you will get about the same return if you have a roof roughly between the southeast and southwest and has a slope of 20o – 60o . The yield is still at least 90% compared to a solar panel on the south. You can easily install solar panels on both flat and sloping roofs.
On average, you earn back solar panels within 5 to 7 years. Since solar panels last for at least 25 years, you will then benefit from free energy for over 15 years.
Netting means that you can offset the energy that you generate with your solar panels (and feed it back to the electricity grid) with the power that you purchase from your energy supplier.
Calculation example:
- You generate 3,500 kWh with your solar panels. You use 2,000 kWh of this directly at home and supply 1,500 kWh back to the electricity grid.
- You purchase 4,000 kWh from your energy supplier.
At the end of the year, you pay 4,000 kWh (which you purchase from the electricity grid) – 1,500 kWh (which you supply back to the electricity grid) = 2,500 kWh to your energy supplier.
Netting as explained in question 3 is part of the netting scheme. The term of this netting scheme was recently extended from 2020 to 2023. This means that at least up to and including 2023, you can offset the power that you generate with your panels and feed it back into the electricity grid with the power that you purchase from your energy supplier.
Unfortunately, there are no longer any national subsidies for solar panels. The simple reason for this is that solar panels have been an attractive investment for some time now, even without a subsidy. The financial return of solar panels is comparable to an annual savings interest of 6-8%. In short, do you want to achieve an attractive return, do you have some savings left, and do you have a suitable roof? Then put your money in solar panels!
Despite the fact that no subsidy is available, you can reclaim the VAT that you pay on the investment in solar panels. 6.
The solar panels on your roof generate direct current. This has to be converted to AC power that you unplug. You need an inverter for that. The inverter converts the DC current into usable AC current.
Hell yes. It is a misunderstanding that solar panels hardly yield anything in winter. Solar panels work on the basis of light; solar panels also generate energy in winter. From March to October this is about 30% of the annual production. The other 70% is generated in the period April-September.
No, that is not so bad. In principle, if you place solar panels at an angle of 30 degrees or more, they will be cleaned by the rain. For solar panels at an angle of 15 degrees, it is advisable to free them from dirt every year. This way you ensure optimal yield.
Hell yes. There are actually two options:
Option 1 is a so-called ‘solar roof’, where the (entire) roof covering consists of solar panels instead of roof tiles. This is quite an extensive job. It is particularly interesting if you are going to replace the roof or with new construction.
Option 2 is that you replace your current roof tiles with solar roof tiles. Aesthetically, this is a great solution because the solar cells are nicely integrated with the existing roof. Normal roof tiles can be replaced one-on-one with solar roof tiles, so you hardly see a difference with a normal roof tile roof.
The disadvantage of both options is the high installation costs. Unless you are simultaneously renovating the roof of your house, you are cheaper with traditional solar panels.
Solar panels are covered by your home insurance. They are attached to your house (this is also called earth-and-nail-proof). You are thus insured against damage caused by hail, snow, lightning, storm and fire. Incidentally, solar panels can endure much more than you think. If you stand on a solar panel with your full weight, there is nothing wrong. However, you are not insured against, for example, damage due to a defect in the solar panel. It is advisable to inform your insurance company that you have installed solar panels on your house. Solar panels increase the home value. As a result, the insured value of the home may have to be redetermined.
Please note: the above applies if you own the property. If you have solar panels on a rental home, the home insurance is in the name of the landlord.
